Marian Bantjes’ TED Talk, Intricate Beauty by Design, explores the concept of seeing design as a puzzle, and how personal interests can be integrated within the design. The approach taken with this narrative and type specimen was to create abstract puzzles with the callout quotes, by omitting or blocking parts of the letters to have the reader figure out what’s really there. The call outs are also placed in a poster series to allow the viewer to focus on the letter forms. My personal interest of photography was implemented by having each shot represent the similar characteristics found in each typeface family. The images were divided into the book while a puzzle was made with the same images to focus on similar traits of type families that are found in everyday life.
